Michael Roberts is a commercial litigator with an established track record of delivering results for clients even in the most complex and challenging scenarios. He regularly handles cases involving allegations of fraud or corruption and set against the backdrop of a corporate collapse or the breakdown of a JV relationship.

Michael also assists clients to navigate the practical challenges presented by FCPA and Bribery Act compliance issues and to manage internal or regulatory investigations.

Michael has a wealth of experience conducting investigations and using the full range of the Court's powers to trace and recover misappropriated assets or secure compensation. Michael has been at the forefront of developments in this area for the past 15 years, being centrally involved in leading cases such as Madoff and the Tajik Aluminium litigation.

For several years, Michael acted for BTA Bank on the largest fraud ever to come before the English Courts (and involving satellite proceedings in numerous other jurisdictions). In 2013, Hogan Lovells was awarded the The Lawyer's 'Litigation Team of the Year' award for its ground-breaking work on the BTA Bank case.

More recently, Michael was successful in securing a landmark victory at the Court of Appeal for client ENRC against the UK Serious Fraud Office in a historic decision which will have lasting implications for the law of privilege in the UK. He was also the lead partner acting for the Russian 'Deposit Insurance Agency' in connection with its proceedings against the oligarch and former senator, Sergei Pugachev. The litigation has generated a number of landmark precedents, including several Court of Appeal decisions, regarding worldwide freezing orders, cross-border insolvency and asset-tracing.

In addition to litigation in England, Michael also has significant experience litigating in off-shore jurisdictions, including the BVI, the Cayman Islands, Jersey and Cyprus. He was also previously based in Hogan Lovells' New York office.
