As Counsel on the Antitrust, Competition and Economic Regulation team at Hogan Lovells, Ilana Kattan advises companies on the antitrust risks of their transactions and shepherds them through complex and in-depth merger control processes in the United States and abroad.
Ilana also represents companies before the antitrust enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, on conduct investigations, and advises companies on a range of antitrust issues, including licensing agreements, joint ventures and other collaborations, and behavioral issues.
Ilana has experience working with companies across a wide range of industries, such as publishing, chemicals, industrials, healthcare, and technology. She has particular experience representing companies in the Life Sciences sector, where she regularly advises pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
Before joining the firm, Ilana was a Special Counsel in the Washington, DC office of a major international law firm. During her time at that firm, Ilana spent six months as part of the London team, where she gained valuable in-depth experience on UK merger control. Ilana was also seconded to a major technology company, where she worked on the company’s docket of antitrust litigation and regulatory matters.

Represented Johnson & Johnson on an ongoing basis, including in its $6.5bn acquisition of Momenta Pharmaceuticals and its $30bn acquisition of Actelion Pharmaceuticals*
Represented Sanderling Renal in the acquisition of renal dialysis clinics divested by DaVita and the University of Utah pursuant to a Federal Trade Commission consent order*
Represented BioNTech in its collaboration with Pfizer for a COVID-19 vaccine*
Represented Cengage in its proposed merger of equals with McGraw-Hill*
Represented Hamakua Energy Partners in litigation alleging an illegal agreement to terminate Hu Honua's power purchase agreement with the power grid operator on the Big Island of Hawaii*
Represented Rexam in its acquisition by Ball*
Represented Novartis in its consumer healthcare joint venture with GlaxoSmithKline; part of a complex set of transactions named Matter of the Year by Global Competition Review*
Represented Hachette Group in various litigations and in recent actions against major trade book publishers*
