Robert works with both private and public sector clients, providing strategic advice and support from the pre-application stage through to implementation, including environmental assessments, compulsory acquisition of land, and contentious planning matters, appeals and judicial review.
In addition to holding a degree in architecture, Robert completed professional conservation training before being appointed as Head of Wall Paintings and Senior Architectural Conservator at English Heritage (now Historic England).
As noted in Legal 500 UK 2024, Robert’s unique and diverse background brings 'heritage-related experience to the team'. This enables him to provide targeted advice on the assessment of heritage impacts, including EIA reviews as part of wider landscape and townscape assessment issues. Robert is the contributing editor for listed buildings and conservation areas for the Butterworths Planning Law Service and sits on a number of conservation and heritage committees.
Advising Related Argent on bringing forward the regeneration development of Brent Cross Town - a joint venture with London Borough of Barnet that will deliver 6,700 homes and associated public realm.
Advising Prudential Assurance on the use of section 203 powers to facilitate delivery of a mixed-use development on a key site on Oxford Street, and with amendments to the consent
Advising Berkeley Homes on its multi-phase residential scheme at Plumstead West Thamesmead (joint venture with Peabody); including securing amendments and negotiating section 106 deeds of variation.
Providing planning advice and support on the purchase of landmark listed properties in Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester.
Reviewed full EIA planning application for Grosvenor’s major mixed-use redevelopment of the South Molton Triangle in Mayfair; including advising on significant heritage impact and land use issues.*
Advised Thames Water and Tideway on various aspects of the Thames Tideway Tunnel; including coordinating S106 agreements with 12 Councils, and securing multiple non-material amendments to the DCO.*
Provided strategic advice on Heathrow’s proposed third runway DCO application; including advice on pre-application consultation, and on EIA (with particular focus on the historic environment).*
Advising Create Commercial REIT on securing planning for a hotel-led development in Southwark, including on business relocation policy and a complex section 106 agreement
