We have partnered with Innovations for Learning to run the virtual TutorMate reading programme in two of our local partner primary schools in London. Twenty volunteers have been paired with 20 students to specifically support children whose reading has fallen behind as a result of the pandemic. The programme is helping to bridge the gap created by the suspension of our volunteer run phonics program.
This innovative tech solution is urgently needed, with studies prior to the pandemic in 2018 finding that 36% of children in England aged 11 from disadvantaged backgrounds left primary school unable to read English well. The platform aims to help close the literacy gap by supporting children within disadvantaged communities who have fallen behind with their reading ability.
